30 Hour Day Take 2

As I type this up we’re 6 hours and 40 minutes out of starting 30 Hour Day 2, a 30 hour live streaming telethon. It’s not just an excuse to get up and prance around on camera at in varied states of wakefulness though, it’s a chance for us to raise funds and visibility for some amazing charities: p:ear, The Oregon Food Bank and The Oregon Trail Chapter of the American Red Cross.

This time around not only will we have some amazing acts (you really should check out the schedule) but we’ll also be recording episodes of Strange Love Live on location and Dr. Normal’s Crazy Talk. We also have an iPhone app this time around, lovingly created for us by Bryan Enigma (who will be one of the guests and SLL tonight).

What with all the conferencing going, ups & downs and the 30 Hour Day planning we’ve been up to at Strange Love Live, we haven’t really been taking the time to record those regularly scheduled shows. It seems we’re on a bit of a hiatus until things calm down.

But that doesn’t mean no new content for you! We wouldn’t leave you all sad and lonely an unattended. Take a moment, or several, to check out these great videos from Web Visions 2010. We’ve got Merlin Mann’s keynote, my interview with keynote speaker Luke Williams and “The Role of Community in Startups” panel with Scott Kveton, Jason Glaspey, Rick Turoczy and Josh Friedman.

Sausagefest 4

Friday night we had a little bit of fun with the format as we brought you some footage from an exceptionally fun night we had with good friend of the show, and of ours, Pete Grillo. Each year Pete holds a party lovingly called Sausagefest where he gathers his friends and the finest sausages he can find in the greater Portland Metro area. Add a dash of booze and accordion players and you have a night not to be missed. This year I counted myself as especially lucky to not only be invited to the party, but invited to bring the cameras and mics along for the ride.

I had a fantastic time recording with my co-host Rick Turoczy, Producer Dr. Normal and production crew Morganpdx and Nate DiNiro. Thanks to the hospitality of our host and all his wonderful guests we had a great night and some fun footage to bring to all of you. Enjoy!

But wait… there’s more! We at SLL love our friends and so when we had the chance to talk to Jason Glaspey and Scott Kveton yet again, of course we took it. But after a long night of interviewing it was decided that maybe Rick and I should have the tables turned. We were shuffled off to the couch while Jason and Scott were given a chance to have a little interview show of their own.

Glancing Back: 2009 with Rick Turoczy

I love recording every episode of Strange Love Live. There’s something magical about sitting in my chair on a Friday night and getting the chance to pick someones brain. Learn something. Garner some knowledge that I wouldn’t other wise have access to. That being said, not all episodes are equal. There are a few times that I get a little extra spring in my step just before show time.

Our January 1st episode with Rick Turoczy of Silicon Florist was just one such occasion.

We at Strange Love Live are honored to work with Rick on a regular basis and through the last year he’s become a friend, not just of the show, but of ours as well. We planned to have him join us for a year end recap months ago. Before we began recording memePDX with him and long before he and I conspired to create 30 Hour Day.

My point is, when we asked him to make a tradition of his year end recap with us, we were thinking that would be that. He’d come do the show, share an overview of 2009, make a few predictions for 2010 and we would call it a night. We didn’t think that the first 45 minutes of the show would, for us, take second stage to the announcements that we made in the last 15 minutes of this episode.

Turoczy and the Tiara of Truth

It would have been much easier and probably more appropriate for me to call this post “The Silicon Florist Turns 2″ or “SiliFlo’s 2!!!” or something all nice and harmless but that wouldn’t be me. Instead I’m going to fixate on that one little thing that made the night completely silly. Rick wearing a tiara. I probably wouldn’t mention it except that he happily donned it and wore it for 45 minutes without a moment of argument.

Join us on Friday’s Tech Edition where we talk to Rick about the Silicon Florist’s first two years. Get all nostalgic as we talk of topics past and swell with hope as we talk about what will be. Then there was cake.

Then it was on to afterhours. I’ll be honest babies, we put our all into making this funny and ridiculous but maybe we just weren’t in the right head space for it. After an impression by Doc and a little silliness with Rick we were back to a serious conversation. It was a good afterhours session and I feel like some good topics were addressed, I just hope you can take it seriously while Rick is wearing a yellow plastic pearl and jewel encrusted tiara. We liked it so much it may show up on the show again.

We’re back with another live episode next Friday with guest Aaron Hockley who’ll be talking about the upcoming WordCamp Portland. It’s sure to be a great event and I’m not just saying that because I’m friends with the organizer, or because I’ll be giving a talk on podcasting, or because last year’s was awesome. I’m saying that because that’s what you say when you’re promoting a show that will be promoting a conference… but that doesn’t make it any less true. On the heels of the SNOWPOCALYPSE just as the mighty THAWNAMI of 2008 began, we sat down in our studio to record the year end review with Rick Turoczy of the Silicon Florist. But woe is me, alas and alack there was no Rick in sight. Things were still too frozen and slippery for our guest to reach us on that dark and chilly night.

So we improvised.
