WebVisions 2010 Panel: Reinventing the Podcast

Last week SLL Productions had the pleasure of being a part of WebVisions 2010 at the Oregon Convention Center. We had our hands full dealing with the stage in the exhibit hall, but that wasn’t the only trick we had up our sleeves.

Friday morning I moderated a panel on podcasting and new media. It was great experience to get to chat with Josh Bancroft, Robert Wagner, Aaron Weiss and Alex Williams for an hour, and luckily Dr Normal was there to catch the whole thing on camera and now you can check it out too.

I’ll update this with some additional information when I have time to collect and make sense of it all, but for now, I hope you enjoy.

Friday night, iPad Eve for all those who were keeping track, we were joined on the show by James Keller of Small Society to talk about iPad and all things iPad related. After going over the general goings on and fun we focused in on some work that Small Society is doing, specifically their work on the sexy new WordPress App for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. Then there’s that whole Portland loves mobile, we love Portland, Portland loves blogging and Open Source lovefest, so we just couldn’t help but mention Urban Airship and Gorlochs.

I always enjoy recording this show. Always. If I didn’t then we wouldn’t have made it to episode 164 which frankly, is an episode that I may have had a bit more fun with than some people would deem necessary. I always enjoy having someone to pal around with on air and that’s just what I got on Friday night when we were finally joined on SLL by Jason Glaspey.

He’s been on conference segments, sausage fest and a special remote from PIE but this was the first time we had Jason in the studio to record and talk to him about him and all the things he’s doing.

Turns out? He’s doing a lot.

So enjoy the show, listen to the witty banter, listen to his tales of start ups from beginning to end and find out about his current project Paleo Plan.

Return of Don Park

Friday night we were joined in SLL studio by Don Park, better known to many of you as @donpdonp. He gave us a rundown on what he’s doing on Jyte for AboutUs and then got us up to date on some interesting developments in the Portland Android scene and a few apps he’s working on (Specifically Swip Swap and Taplister) before scaring the hell out of Cami with talk of barely there feeling shoes and foot high-fives. Plus the rise and fall of twitter in Don’s life and why he thinks Google Buzz will take over!

Oh and he may have mentioned a little film project by the name of Solid Liquid Air.

Oh wait, no… that’s not how I meant to start this post. I’m supposed to tell you that Friday night we were joined in studio by the lovely Christine Kistner. We started with a talk about motion graphics and her love of the field and then quickly moved onto Beer & Blog, Portlandy goodness and then…

Tequila! Yes we talked about her love of Tequaila too. She gave us a few pointers on which tequilas are best for what use and then gave me a brief rundown on the process she uses to infuse tequila. Though oddly? We were drinking fruity rum drinks that night.

It was big as ever and he came back with some new insight and a few new gadgets to share with us. When all the gadget fun was had, we got the chance to chat and laugh talking about people, places and things near and dear to the Portland experience.

2010 has been a positively wonderful year for me. I’ve enjoyed very nearly every second of the last 2 weeks… however, some strange things have been afoot in the SLL studios.

Equipment malfunction being just a small part of that whole insanity.

That being said? The episode we aired last week (our 30 Hour Day episode) isn’t up yet. Did you notice? Well no… of course not because I didn’t mention it. But that doesn’t change the fact that we have a brand spanking new episode with our resident gadget guy Brian M. Westbrook at 10 PM on Friday. He’s just home from CES and ready to share.

Glancing Back: 2009 with Rick Turoczy

I love recording every episode of Strange Love Live. There’s something magical about sitting in my chair on a Friday night and getting the chance to pick someones brain. Learn something. Garner some knowledge that I wouldn’t other wise have access to. That being said, not all episodes are equal. There are a few times that I get a little extra spring in my step just before show time.

Our January 1st episode with Rick Turoczy of Silicon Florist was just one such occasion.

We at Strange Love Live are honored to work with Rick on a regular basis and through the last year he’s become a friend, not just of the show, but of ours as well. We planned to have him join us for a year end recap months ago. Before we began recording memePDX with him and long before he and I conspired to create 30 Hour Day.

My point is, when we asked him to make a tradition of his year end recap with us, we were thinking that would be that. He’d come do the show, share an overview of 2009, make a few predictions for 2010 and we would call it a night. We didn’t think that the first 45 minutes of the show would, for us, take second stage to the announcements that we made in the last 15 minutes of this episode.
